Tuesday, May 9, 2017, Day 17, Sailing from Antigua to Madeira

Cindy’s single biggest challenge while sailing is being able to throw biodegradable stuff off the boat on the first try. Too often, the product hits something on the boat and has to be thrown again, or it simply doesn’t make it off the boat. So embarrassing! 😉

The ocean was friendly yesterday. Swells primarily from one direction (really!), about three meters tops. At 6:30 p.m. yesterday, we had 798 nautical miles to go.

The wind was light this morning, so we unfurled the Screecher. Within 15 minutes, a squall started to develop, so we furled the Screecher.

Kirill and Yulia had a similar experience last night. The winds picked up so quickly, they were up to 30 knots by the time Kirill and Yulia were able to furl it.

Yulia joked this morning that all we have to do to encourage the wind to blow is say the word, “Screecher.”

Big news: We have both taken our third shower of the voyage now! We know you care.

We moved our clocks forward another hour today. We are now at GMT-1.00. We wish we could change time zones at random in MN. We would certainly sleep later on snowy mornings!

This is Victory Day in Russia, so Yulia and Kirill gave us another bottle of wine to share in celebration. In case you are wondering, we typically don’t drink underway, and Yulia and Kirill are sticking to it 100 percent. But they are treating us on special occasions since we are guests. So nice of them!

Today was a beautiful day for sailing. In other words, as we four say, boring. 😉

Kirill spent some more time sharpening his machete today.
